Creative Team

This beautifully acted, stripped-back West End revival is directed by Rachel Kavanaugh. Based on William Nicholson's original BAFTA-winning television film and stage script, the production features fluid, minimalist scenic design by Peter McKintosh (which subtly incorporates Narnia references behind a hidden bookcase), lighting design by Howard Harrison, and sound design by Fergus O'Hare.

Synopsis

Based on a true story, Shadowlands centers on the quiet, comfortably ordered academic life of Oxford don C.S. Lewis—the famous bachelor author of The Chronicles of Narnia. His strictly intellectual world is turned completely upside down when he meets Joy Davidman, a sharp-witted, fiercely independent American poet who travels to England with her young son, Douglas. What starts as a warm platonic friendship and legal marriage of convenience quickly blossoms into a profound, transformative love affair. However, Lewis's deeply held Christian faith and long-standing emotional detachment are put to the ultimate test when Joy is tragically diagnosed with terminal bone cancer, forcing the author to confront the raw, shattering reality of true grief.

Production History & Casting Highlights

Originating as a critically acclaimed, sell-out run at the Chichester Festival Theatre in 2019, this production finally transferred to London’s West End for a strictly limited engagement at the Aldwych Theatre, running from February 5 to May 9, 2026.

The revival was celebrated for its extraordinary, emotionally devastating lead performances:

• Hugh Bonneville: The Downton Abbey and Paddington star reprised his widely praised Chichester performance as C.S. "Jack" Lewis, earning raves for breaking through the character's stiff-upper-lip Englishness into a heartbreaking display of raw sorrow.

• Maggie Siff: The American television star (Mad Men, Billions) made a formidable West End debut as the fiercely intelligent, quick-witted Joy Davidman.

• The Ensemble: The principal cast was anchored by Jeff Rawle as Lewis’s fiercely loyal brother, Major W.H. "Warnie" Lewis, and Timothy Watson as the rigid Professor Christopher Riley.

Because the limited, star-led revival officially closed its strictly timed booking window in May 2026, it will be eligible for consideration at the 2027 Laurence Olivier Awards next spring. Critics widely tip Hugh Bonneville for a Best Actor nomination.
