Synopsis

Set on the back porch of a house in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago, Proof follows Catherine, a brilliant but volatile young woman who has spent years caretaking for her father, Robert, a renowned University of Chicago mathematics professor who suffered from severe mental illness. Following Robert's recent death, his former graduate student, Hal, discovers a groundbreaking, paradigm-shifting mathematical proof about prime numbers hidden in Robert’s chaotic notebooks. When Catherine claims that she—not her father—wrote the revolutionary proof, a gripping drama unfolds. The play explores the thin line between genius and madness, the heavy sacrifices of caregiving, and the struggles of a young woman fighting for academic recognition in a male-dominated field.

Production History

David Auburn’s masterwork originally premiered Off-Broadway at Manhattan Theatre Club in May 2000, before transferring to Broadway's Walter Kerr Theatre in October 2000, where it ran for an incredible 917 performances starring Mary-Louise Parker. The play made its West End debut at the Donmar Warehouse in 2002, starring Gwyneth Paltrow, who later reprised her role for the 2005 Miramax film adaptation alongside Anthony Hopkins. It has since become a staple of regional and international theater. This strictly limited 2026 engagement at the Booth Theatre (running March 31–July 19, 2026) marks the play's very first Broadway revival.

The 2026 revival generated massive box-office buzz by featuring two monumental, highly publicized Broadway debuts:

• The Leads: Emmy Award winner Ayo Edebiri (The Bear) stars as the fierce, guarded Catherine, playing opposite Academy Award nominee Don Cheadle (Hotel Rwanda) as her brilliant, spectral father, Robert.

• The Supporting Cast: Jin Ha (Hamilton, Pachinko) plays the ambitious graduate student Hal, while Tony Award winner Kara Young (Purlie Victorious) originally opened the revival as Catherine's pragmatic sister, Claire, before passing the torch to Tony winner Adrienne Warren (Tina) for the summer leg of the run.
