This highly anticipated Broadway revival features a legendary synth-pop score by ABBA’s Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, with sweeping lyrics by EGOT winner Tim Rice. Directed by Tony Award winner Michael Mayer (Spring Awakening), this production breathes new life into the piece with an sharp, fast-paced revised book by Emmy Award winner Danny Strong (Dopesick). The creative team is rounded out by choreographer Lorin Latarro and music supervisor Brian Usifer.

Synopsis

Set at the height of the Cold War, Chess allegorically mirrors superpower political tensions through an intense World Chess Championship. The plot centers on a volatile, high-stakes tournament between a rock-and-roll American grandmaster, Freddie Trumper, and his fiercely disciplined Soviet rival, Anatoly Sergievsky. As the match progresses in Bangkok and Budapest, the political becomes deeply personal when Florence Vassy—Freddie's Hungarian-born manager—falls in love with Anatoly, resulting in a dangerous love triangle entangled with government espionage, media manipulation, and shifting loyalties.

UK + Broadway Production History

Chess began as a wildly successful 1984 concept album before opening to a triumphant three-year run in London’s West End in 1986. However, its original 1988 Broadway premiere was heavily altered and closed after just two months. After a 37-year absence, the show finally made its triumphant, full-scale Broadway revival return at the Imperial Theatre, opening on November 16, 2025, and playing a successful eight-month engagement through June 21, 2026.

The blockbuster 2025 revival company boasted some of the most formidable vocal powerhouses on Broadway:

• The Players: Tony Award winner Aaron Tveit (Moulin Rouge!) delivered a blistering performance as the arrogant, self-destructive Freddie Trumper, singing a spectacular "One Night in Bangkok," opposite Nicholas Christopher (Sweeney Todd) who earned widespread acclaim for his soaring, definitive rendition of "Anthem" as Anatoly.

• Florence & The Ensemble: Acclaimed stage and screen star Lea Michele (Funny Girl, Glee) starred as the emotionally torn Florence Vassy, lending her powerhouse vocals to classics like "Nobody's Side." The stellar principal cast also featured Hannah Cruz as Svetlana, Bradley Dean as Molokov, and Tony nominee Bryce Pinkham as a charismatic, narrator-style Arbiter.
