Creative Team

Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York) features an intimate, incredibly witty contemporary pop score, lyrics, and book by the British writing duo Jim Barne and Kit Buchan. The production is directed and choreographed by Tim Jackson, with innovative, suitcase-based scenic and costume designs by Soutra Gilmour, and vibrant orchestrations by Lux Pyramid.

Synopsis

This charming, subverted two-hander rom-com follows Dougal, an impossibly upbeat, naive young British man flying to New York City for the first time to attend the wedding of his estranged father. He is met at the airport by Robin, the bride's cynical, fiercely independent, and completely exhausted sister. Tasked with dragging Dougal and an extravagant wedding cake across Manhattan, the polar opposites navigate 24 hours of holiday-season chaos. Through high-energy numbers like "New York" and "American Express," the show evolves into a moving story about two lost individuals learning to love themselves through the orbit of someone else.

Production History

The musical originally premiered in 2019 at the New Wolsey Theatre in Ipswich under the title The Season. It was heavily reworked, debuting to critical acclaim at London’s Off-West End Kiln Theatre in late 2023 before transferring to a smash-hit West End run at the Criterion Theatre in 2024. Following a North American premiere at the American Repertory Theater (A.R.T.) in mid-2025, the production officially transferred to Broadway, opening at the Longacre Theatre on November 20, 2025.

Awards Recognition

A major critical darling of the 2025–2026 theatrical season, the production garnered widespread acclaim across multiple award circles. Jim Barne and Kit Buchan won the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Lyrics. Most notably, the production captured a staggering eight nominations at the 2026 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Book, Best Score, and individual acting nods for its two principal leads.
