The upcoming Broadway revival of Evita brings the masterwork by composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyricist Tim Rice back to New York. The production is helmed by visionary director Jamie Lloyd, featuring minimalist, time-period-agnostic costume and set designs by Soutra Gilmour, sharp choreography by Fabian Aloise, and atmospheric lighting by Jon Clark.

Synopsis

Set against the turbulent political backdrop of mid-20th-century Argentina, Evita follows the ruthless, meteoric rise of Eva Duarte Perón. Escaping rural poverty, Eva climbs the social ladder to become a glamorous actress and, eventually, the fiercely adored yet deeply polarizing First Lady alongside President Juan Perón. Adored by the working-class descamisados as a saintly savior, she simultaneously amasses immense wealth and political influence before her tragic death from cancer at age 33. The story is critically dismantled by the cynical, omnipresent narrator Che, and scored by a legendary rock-opera soundtrack featuring "Don't Cry for Me Argentina" and "Another Suitcase in Another Hall."

Production History & Casting Highlights

Following a wildly successful, sold-out 12-week premiere at the London Palladium in summer 2025, producers officially announced that the production will transfer to Broadway. The highly anticipated revival is set to open at the Winter Garden Theatre on March 25, 2027 (with previews beginning February 27).

Casting highlights include:

• Rachel Zegler: Reprising her celebrated, powerhouse performance as Eva Perón. Fresh off her Broadway debut in Romeo & Juliet, Zegler returns to New York to lead the Main Stem transfer.

• The Broadway Ensemble: While full secondary casting is still to be announced, the original West End run famously featured Diego Andres Rodriguez as Che and James Olivas as Juan Perón.

• A Reimagined Staging: Director Jamie Lloyd famously went viral in London by having Zegler sing "Don't Cry for Me Argentina" from an actual exterior balcony to crowds outside the theatre. Because New York logistics prevent replicating that exact stunt, Lloyd is developing a brand-new staging concept unique to the Broadway layout.

Olivier Awards Recap

Before crossing the Atlantic, the production dominated the London theater scene. At the 2026 Laurence Olivier Awards, the production took home two major wins, highlighted by Rachel Zegler winning Best Actress in a Musical and Fabian Aloise winning Best Theatre Choreographer. The West End run also secured a nomination for Best Musical Revival.
