This landmark adaptation of Harper Lee's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel features a blistering, contemporary script by Academy Award winner Aaron Sorkin (The West Wing). Synopsis

Set in Maycomb, Alabama, in 1934, the play centers on Atticus Finch, a small-town lawyer appointed to defend Tom Robinson, a Black man falsely accused of rape. Shifting the focus from the novel's traditional childhood perspective, Sorkin reinterprets the courtroom drama to closely scrutinize Atticus's own naive optimism regarding the judicial system. As the volatile trial exposes deep-seated racial prejudices, Atticus's children, Scout and Jem, are forced to confront the harsh end of innocence and the violent realities of the Jim Crow South.

Broadway Background

The production originally opened at Broadway's Shubert Theatre on December 13, 2018. It shattered box office records, consistently grossing over $2 million a week to become the highest-grossing American play in Broadway history. The critically acclaimed production played for more than 1,200 performances before closing in 2022.

UK Production History

The play made its triumphant West End debut at the Gielgud Theatre in March 2022, running for over a year to packed houses. Following that initial smash-hit season, the production embarked on a extensive, highly successful tour of the UK and Ireland. Capitalizing on that massive momentum, the production returned to London for a strictly limited 12-week summer return engagement at Wyndham's Theatre, running from 25 June to 12 September 2026.

Awards Recognition

On Broadway, the original 2019 production received nine Tony Award nominations, with screen legend Celia Keenan-Bolger winning the Tony for Best Featured Actress in a Play for her performance as Scout. Upon transferring across the Atlantic, the production maintained its juggernaut status, earning five Laurence Olivier Award nominations in 2023, including the coveted nod for Best New Play.
