Synopsis

Set in the 1950s, the story follows Tom Ripley, a struggling New York con artist hired by wealthy shipbuilder Herbert Greenleaf to travel to Italy and convince his playboy son, Dickie, to return home. Intoxicated by Dickie’s lavish lifestyle on the Amalfi Coast, Tom’s fascination quickly turns into a lethal obsession. When Dickie tires of him, Tom resorts to forgery, identity theft, and murder—assuming Dickie's persona to claim his fortune while staying one step ahead of the law. Leipacher’s theatrical staging incorporates a chorus of "Figures" representing Tom's inner conscience, paranoia, and the surrounding Italian populace.

Production History

Marking the 70th anniversary of Patricia Highsmith’s classic 1955 novel, this inaugural UK and Ireland tour launched on September 4, 2025, at the Everyman Theatre in Cheltenham. Produced prior to a planned West End run, the staging toured prominent regional venues—including the Edinburgh Festival Theatre, Oxford Playhouse, Birmingham Rep, Richmond Theatre, and Dublin—spanning through spring 2026.

Cast Highlights

• Ed McVey(Tom Ripley): Best known for playing a young Prince William in Netflix’s The Crown, McVey leads the production with a nervy, obsessive portrayal of the psychopathic anti-hero.

• Bruce Herbelin-Earle(Dickie Greenleaf): Star of Free Rein and The Boys in the Boat, Herbelin-Earle made his professional stage debut as the charismatic, entitled heir.

• Maisie Smith(Marge Sherwood): Former EastEnders star and Strictly Come Dancing finalist, Smith plays Dickie's suspicious, grounded love interest.

• Supporting Cast: Features Christopher Bianchi as Herbert Greenleaf/Roverini and Cary Crankson as the doomed Freddie Miles.
